Good for us
Children's sermon
Object:
a cross beam with ropes, a sign that reads "Jesus of Nazareth, King of
the Jews" (Optional: tiny crosses for each child)
So they took Jesus; and carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is
called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. There they
crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them.
(19:16b-18)
Good morning, boys and girls. We call this Good Friday and we mean that for us it was a good day. It was good for us because this is the day that Jesus died for our sins. I thought that some of you would be interested in what was done to Jesus. (select a volunteer) As many of you know, a man named Pilate, the governor of Israel, did not believe that Jesus was guilty of any crime, but he could not convince the people to let Jesus go. Pilate was afraid of the people, so after meeting with the priests he turned Jesus over to soldiers and allowed Jesus to be crucified.
The first thing the soldiers did was tied the arms and the hands to a beam of wood. (have your volunteer extend his arms and tie his wrists and upper arms to the wood) Many people believe that Jesus was tied to a whole cross and some people believe that it was just the one piece of the cross. It is very difficult to do anything when you are tied like our friend is tied. Jesus had to walk on streets with people standing on either side of him yelling and pushing and even spitting on him. At least once he fell to the ground and I am sure that this really hurt. But the soldiers pulled him up to his feet and made him keep walking. There was a hill outside of the city walls that looked like a human skull. At the top of the hill is where they took Jesus to be crucified. The soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross with heavy mallets and big nails through his hands and feet. After he was nailed and tied with ropes, they pulled the cross up and let Jesus hang in a very painful way. They also hung a sign above the head of Jesus: "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."
There were people that followed Jesus to his crucifixion. We know that his mother was there and also his disciple, John. There were a lot of other people that watched this very bad thing happen to Jesus. It took about three hours before Jesus died. During that time, they brushed his lips with sour wine that was more like vinegar. They divided up his clothes so that every soldier had something of Jesus'. They also stabbed him with a spear.
Jesus was very brave. He knew that his death was a part of the plan that God had worked out with him. This was the way that God had decided to pay for our sins. God loves us and does not want us to die separated from him. Jesus died for all of our sins and made us free from hate and the devil.
The next time you see the cross I want you to remember that Jesus died on the cross to pay for everyone's sins. Amen.
