I grew up "poor" -- or so I thought. My siblings and I wore hand-me-downs from our cousins, and we were glad to get them. There was one Christmas when we were the recipients of a Christmas basket of fruit, candy, cookies, and a turkey from a charity group in our county because we were on "the list." There was rarely extra money for luxuries like restaurants, movies, or vacations. I didn't stay in a motel until I was sixteen, and then only because my school paid for the room so I could compete in the sectional wrestling tournament in a distant town.
