For August 4, 2024:
  • Souvenirs from a Faith Journey by Dean Feldmeyer. A piece of Hinduism, a chunk of Evangelical Christianity, a little bit of Buddhism, some Native American spirituality, and two bits of New Age mumbo jumbo. People on a contemporary faith journey tend to visit many places and pick up souvenirs as they go.

David Kalas
I asked the folks in my congregation once whether they struggled with sin. It was not a question to which I expected public, out-loud answers. But I did want them to contemplate the question individually. And I suggested to them that there were three possible answers: No, no, and yes.

Peter Andrew Smith
John was angry. He sliced open the box with the cans in it and threw the box cutter onto the floor. He grabbed the cans and forced them into place in the shelf. How dare she? How dare she call him a bad manager, a terrible boss, and a toxic employer? He had built this business up from nothing. He was the reason people like her had work. When everyone told him there was no chance of anything succeeding in this neighborhood he had taken the chance, he had put in the long hours and the lean years to make this work. He was successful.

Object: A basket filled with different kinds of bread. Have the basket covered when you begin. I usually try to have a mix of sliced bread, pita bread, flatbread, French bread, and any others I can find.

Call to Worship:

Jesus offers us the Bread of Heaven and the Water of Life. Let us join his feast this morning and eat and drink our fill.

Invitation to Confession:

Jesus, we often search for exotic food and drink.
Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, sometimes we fail to be satisfied by plain bread or water.
Christ, have mercy.

Jesus, help us to receive and enjoy the good gifts you offer us.
Lord, have mercy.

Psalm 51 is revered as one of the most moving and memorable examples of penitence found in the Bible. The superscription attributes the psalm to David himself at the time when the prophet Nathan confronted the king with his adultery with Bathsheba. Whether or not David wrote (or spoke) these words, they certainly reflect a proper sense of remorse in the face of moral failure.

John R. Brokhoff
The deed was done. Uriah was killed in battle and Bathsheba
with David's unborn child moves into David's palace. So what? It
appeared to be a perfect crime. No one asked questions and no one
protested. The catch was, "The thing that David had done
displeased the Lord." (2 Samuel 11:27) Now God steps into the
story by sending Nathan by use of a story to bring David to a
realization of his sin: "You are the man." David confesses and
hears the penalty: death of the child.

Lesson 2: Ephesians 4:1-16 (C)
Thomas W. Lentz
... I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received....
-- Ephesians 4:1

You and I have received a higher calling.

Every person here this morning is going to be challenged to live according to a higher calling.

Robert L. Salzgeber
The people said, "Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, just as the scripture says, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' " Jesus answered, "What Moses gave you was not the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the real bread from heaven."
Stephen M. Crotts
Country singer Gene Watson croons:

Slip into something soft,
And then come slip into my arms again.
Strip away your conscience and
Take off your wedding band.

Cheating has become America's national pastime. Statistically, 65 percent of men have affairs by age forty. For women it's 35 percent.
