About Losing and Saving
Children's sermon
Object:
a box labeled frozen ice cream
“...those who lose their life for my sake...will save it.” (v. 35b)
Good morning girls and boys,
Thank you for joining me for the special message I have just for you.
Jesus said many things that are easy to understand. Jesus also said some things that are hard to understand. Today, Jesus’ words are a mystery.
So give me your ears and your eyes.
I have here a pretend box labeled frozen ice cream. Inside could be frozen ice cream fudge bars, or it could be Nestle's drumsticks, or it could be Ben and Jerry's ice cream cones.
It could be strawberry, chocolate, raspberry, pineapple, or Oreo crush.
Now let’s pretend that the pretend frozen ice cream inside this love box is love.
And if I just let this box sit in the hot sun what would happen to the ice cream?
(children respond)
Yes, it would melt and go away. It would not be good for anything would it?
But if I open this love box and hand out the frozen ice cream everybody would get a treat and everybody would get a smile.
Love is like that. If you keep love locked away it soon melts and disappears and is good for nothing. But give love away and everybody smiles.
Jesus said that life is like love. Life is sort of like the treats in this pretend box.
You give it away and you save it. Jesus put it this way “...those who lose their life for my sake...will save it.”
Jesus was actually talking about his life. Soon he would be giving his life away by dying on the cross and thereby saving everyone -- including you and me.
Prayer: Thank you dear Jesus for giving your life away for the sins of the world. Help me to give rather that save. Amen.
