“...for God all things are possible.” (v. 27b)
Good morning boys and girls,
I am really happy to see you this morning. And I have a story from the Bible that is most interesting. This story has something to say to you and to me too. So listen up!
It's a story about a rich man who wanted to follow Jesus.
This fellow asked Jesus questions about how to follow him. The man did everything right. He obeyed the commandments. And he was rich. He owned a lot of stuff.
But Jesus said he lacked one thing. Could he give up all the stuff he owned?
And this rich man, whom Jesus loved, just could not give up all the things he owned.
It came to this: follow Jesus or stay in love with stuff. He chose stuff.
It’s a sad story. But listen to this...
Once there was this boy who got his hand caught inside a very expensive Chinese vase.
Mom, dad, no one, could pull his hand out of this rare precious vessel. So they broke this expensive vase. They broke it all to pieces. Then they realized why the little boy could not get his hand out of the vase. It was because his fist was clenched like this. (show clenched fist) And would you believe in his fist was only a penny? (show penny)
Do you and I have stuff or things or “pennies” in our lives that keep us from following Jesus? (children respond) From time to time different things like clothes and toys and games and technology and sports want to sneak in and capture our attention and even our souls.
So Peter asked Jesus after the rich man went away crying, if anyone can be saved?
Jesus said, “Surely, with God all things are possible.”
The good news is that anything is possible with God. Rich people and poor people, generous kids and greedy kids can follow Jesus. Why and how? Because God makes it all possible. Wahoo!
Prayer: Oh my Lord. Help us to not let stuff stop us from following you, dearest loving Jesus. Amen.
