A pile of books
I have just been to the library and look at all my amazing books! Don't you think I will be much smarter after reading all these?! But will I be much wiser? What is the difference between being smart and being wise?
Let's look at our story in Matthew 2:1-12. It tells us that Magi or wise men came seeking to find the one born King of the Jews. Most people did not even realize that Jesus had come into the world but these men were wise, they stood out differently from the rest of the people. Wise people may not follow everyone else but are willing to do the right thing even if they are scared.
The wise men had traveled thousands of miles to get to see this King Jesus. Wise people have priorities and persistence even though circumstances can be hard. But one of the wisest things they did was to listen to God's instruction over Herod's words to go back and tell him about where Jesus was. Sometimes we may want to please others but pleasing God is so much more important and wiser.
So will all these books make me wiser? Not really -- God is the one that gives wisdom. It is when we learn how to apply knowledge with His principles that we gain wisdom. Knowledge is the possession of facts but wisdom is knowing how to use those facts.
How do we apply this to our lives?
If you want wisdom, you need to ask God to help you, it doesn't just come from books. We too can be wise men if we are willing to ask God and not do it just all on our own. Are you willing to please God and do what He says is right even though everyone else may be doing something different. For example, how we spend our money... do we just buy what everyone else says we need to buy, or do we seek God and ask for Him to guide us? We too can be wise men if we ask God.
