Ambassadors for Christ
Children's sermon
Object:
an American flag
So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (5:20-21)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we are going to talk about ambassadors. Can any of you tell me what an ambassador is? (allow answers) An ambassador is someone who represents their country in another country. For example, American ambassadors go to all kinds of other countries in the world to show that we want to have a good relationship with that country. While living in another country, the ambassador has the American flag flying above the building where he/she works. What countries can you think of that American ambassadors might go to? (allow answers) There are lots of countries in the world, and American ambassadors could go to any of them!
Do you think it is easy to be an ambassador? (allow answers) It would probably be fun -- you would get to travel to a different country and learn about a different culture, a different language, and maybe even a different religion. But it would probably be hard, too. It would be hard to be so far away from home! Have you ever been away from home? (allow answers) How did that feel? (allow answers) It is fun for a little while, but you start to miss the place you are from and the people you love.
Being an ambassador for Christ is like being an ambassador in a different country. We don't have to leave our homes, but sometimes it is still lonely. Among people we know, we can sometimes feel like strangers when we try to live a certain way. Not everyone tries to live like Jesus wants us to; it is our job as ambassadors to set a good example for others around us. It is up to us to show that it is possible to live a life where you don't lie, cheat, or steal. It is possible to live by putting other people first and honoring those around you. But it is hard. It is hard to be different from those around you. We like to be like other people! We don't always want to be set apart from others. But Jesus calls us to be ambassadors who set a special example for those around us. And it is up to us to show that we can choose to live like Christ. Amen.
