An Angel of Christmas
Children's sermon
Object:
a treetop angel
Object: a treetop angel
The Point: God sent a messenger (an angel) to announce to the world some very good news: His love has come to us.
The Lesson: Welcome boys and girls. This is such an exciting time of the year, and I appreciate you coming up and sharing it with me. Christmas is a special time to be together.
This morning, before I came over to the church, I took a step stool, reached up to the very top of our Christmas tree, and took down this angel. We always have an angel at the top of our Christmas tree.
What is on top of your Christmas tree at home? (let children answer) A star is often on the top of a Christmas tree. It reminds us of the star that shone so brightly on that first Christmas Eve night. It shined upon the place where Jesus was born. It also was a sign and a guide to the wise men who came from far countries to give honor and praise to Jesus.
In our home we always put an angel at the top of our Christmas tree. It is our tradition because the angel reminds us that on that first Christmas Eve night, a messenger from heaven came and announced to the shepherds, "I bring you good news of great joy that is for all people. Tonight a Savior has been born to you in Bethlehem." His name is Jesus and his name means "God saves." That is the whole reason for celebrating Christmas. God's love for us became real and walked in our midst in his son, Jesus. What are your family traditions? (let children answer)
So every Christmas the first ornament we place on our Christmas tree is an angel. It reminds us of the message of Christmas that God's love is real and his love has come to save us. Do you know what "angel" actually means? (let children answer) The word angel means "messenger." And the angel is at the very top of our tree because the message of "good news of great joy" is meant for everyone to hear and know.
Here is a special Christmas thought. When you wish someone a "Merry Christmas," you are being a messenger for heaven, a Christmas angel too.
Closing Prayer: Let us unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, on this very special night as we celebrate your birth, fill our lives with the truly good news of your saving love. As we share in the message of Christmas, help us to be your messengers sharing with the world the great joy of hope and peace for all people. Jesus, may we be your living angels of good news to the world. Amen and Merry Christmas!
