Beautiful Feet
Children's sermon
Object:
ash basin with water, towel, bath perfume, wet wash cloth
“So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.” (v. 14)
Good morning beautiful children,
Did you notice? I called you “beautiful children?” (children respond) Well I meant it. And I have a reason to call you “beautiful.” But first, if you were playing outside on a hot summer day and you got hot, sweaty, and irritable, you know what would feel good? If someone took this cool wet washcloth and gently wiped your face. The sweat and grime would be gone. And with a sip of lemonade, you would feel so refreshed. (demonstrate on a willing participant) (child answers)
In hot Palestine where Jesus lived and people walked a lot, visitors to a home were honored when they got their feet washed. Either the host, or a servant, took a bowl and towel like this (show bowl and towel) and washed the guest's feet.(if comfortable wash one child's feet) (dab with a touch of bath perfume so all can smell the aroma) How did that feel? (child responds)
No servant or disciple offered to wash the twelve disciples’ feet that night at the Last Supper. So Jesus got up and washed his disciples’ feet. The disciples were shocked. They even objected at first. Then Jesus said, “So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.” The disciples’ feet were beautiful to Jesus.
To wash a person's feet showsone is humble. To wash a person's feet shows love and caring. Are there ways children show love, and care for someone? (children respond)
Jesus, by washing the disciples’ feet, was also preparing them for their mission. After Jesus was gone, the disciples whose feet were washed by him at the last supper would wash other people's feet. How? By telling and showing them the good news.
The Bible says “how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.”(Romans 10:14) Did you know that your feet and your whole person is beautiful whenever you bring good news to others? So beautiful children let's do what Jesus did.
Prayer: Dear Lord and Teacher, thank you for showing us how to love. Help us to bring good news to others. Amen.
