The beginning and the end
Children's sermon
Object:
Four cards, one with a large A printed on it, one with a
Z, one with an Alpha symbol and one with an Omega symbol
Good morning! How well do you all know your alphabet? How
many can tell me what the first letter is in the English alphabet?
(Let them answer.) That's right. The first letter is A. (Show the
A.) Now what is the last letter in the English alphabet? (Let them
answer.) You're right again. The last letter is a Z. (Show the Z.)
If someone were to say to you that he knew something from A
to Z, what would he be saying? (Let them answer.) It would mean
that he knew it all. He would mean that he knew it completely.
Now, if God says to us that he is the A and the Z, what is he
saying to us? (Let them answer.) Well, the A is the beginning of
the alphabet and the Z is the end, so wouldn't you agree that God
would be saying to us that he is the beginning and the end? (Let
them answer.) Well, that's exactly true about God. He is the
beginning and the end. He created everything that you see in this
world; created it in the beginning. And he will be the one to
decide when everything will end, so he really is the A and the Z,
the beginning and the end.
Has God ever said to us that he is the A and the Z? Can you
find that in the Bible? (Let them answer.) Well, he didn't say
that in English because the Bible wasn't written in English, but
the Bible says it in Greek, the language that our New Testament
was written in. In the Greek language, the first letter of the
alphabet looks like this (show the Alpha), and the last letter
looks like this (show the Omega).
So God has said to us that he is the Beginning and the End;
the Alpha and the Omega; the A and the Z, in our language. Will
that help you remember just how important he is? (Let them
answer.)
Dear Heavenly Father: We know that you are the Alpha and the
Omega, the Beginning and the End. Keep us ever mindful of your
power and your love. Amen.
