Being A Friend
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a box of tissues
What makes you sad? Have you ever had a friend that was really upset? You often don't know what to do to help your friend. You may only be able to offer a tissue. When Jesus lived on earth he was around many sad people.
One day there was a mother that was really sad because her only son had died. Even though Jesus was in a big crowd, he saw this lady and he cared about her and went out of his way to speak to her. The Gospel for today says that, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don't cry.” (Luke 7:13)
When we see someone who is having a difficult time, are we willing to go out of our way to help them and comfort them? It may mean baking some cookies, or sending an email, or stopping by to visit.
There is a story of a 90 year-old lady that had a very bad fall. She had been in the hospital for several weeks. When she came home from being gone so long, the neighbors decided to make a big poster that would be a welcome home sign for her. They taped it on the outside of the door so that all the other neighbors could see that she was coming home. Oh how that small act of caring touched that dear lady. She kept that poster for a long time. At the time it seemed like such a small thing to the neighbors, but it meant a great deal to the older lady.
Jesus could have been too busy that day to have seen this lady that was crying. I am sure he had lots to do that day and so many people wanted his attention. But he went out of his way to say I love you.
God calls us also to be filled up with His compassion and kindness. So how can we apply this to our lives??
Be willing to have an interruption or appointment from God.
