And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. (v. 26:16)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you know what today is? (allow answers) Today is Palm Sunday! This is the day that we celebrate Jesus' ride into Jerusalem. It was like a parade: people lined the streets, waving palm branches and shouting "Hosanna!" They were excited to see Jesus ride into the city.
Something else was happening, too. Beneath all of the happiness and excitement, something dark was happening. Can anyone tell me what the word "betray" means? (allow answers) The word "betray" means to break someone's trust. Can you think of someone you trust? (allow answers) We trust our parents. We trust our friends. What if someone asked you to betray your best friend? Let's pretend that your best friend is really scared of frogs. Let's pretend that when your best friend sees a frog, they start to cry. Well, what if someone asked you to put a frog in your best friend's backpack? What would you do? (allow answers) You probably wouldn't do it! You don't want to hurt your friend -- you don't want to betray their trust.
But let's say that person offered you a lot of money to put that frog in your friend's backpack. Maybe they came up to you during a big classroom party and said, "Hey. I'll give you one hundred dollars if you put this frog in your best friend's backpack." Would you be tempted to do it? (allow answers) One hundred dollars is a lot of money! You would probably think twice before saying "No."
Well, something similar happened with one of Jesus' disciples. One of Jesus' disciples was named Judas. Right before Jesus paraded into Jerusalem -- with all the palm branches and "Hosannas!" and the crowds of people -- his follower Judas made a terrible bargain. In exchange for thirty pieces of silver, Judas agreed to betray Jesus to the Jewish authorities. These were the people in charge of Jerusalem who did not like Jesus. They wanted Jesus dead! Judas' betrayal would be far, far worse than just putting a frog in Jesus' bag. Judas' betrayal could lead to Jesus' death.
Judas' bargain will begin the series of events that leads to Easter Sunday. Although today is a day of celebration, of Jesus entering Jerusalem in triumph, it is also a day where we remember what happens when friends betray the ones they love. Amen.
