“Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.” (v. 10)
Good morning girls and boys,
Have you had a fun week? Were there things that made you glad? I have been glad this week but now kind of sad. You know why? Starting today, this Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week. We call it Holy Week because for something to be holy, it is always about God.
So this Holy Week is all about Jesus. And it's going to be a difficult week for Jesus.
I have some make believe tickets for each of you so you can go to Disneyland! Here you are. Now go have some fun.
No, give them back to me! I am going to give them to some bullies. I'm going to give them to some kids that are mean and nasty and not you!
Now, how did you feel just now, when I gave you these tickets and then took them away?
(children respond)
That's called “betrayal.” To be nice and then to be bad is deceiving and lying.
We don't like that behavior do we? (children respond)
During Holy Week Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot. Judas was Jesus' disciple and follower but then turned against Jesus. Judas deceived Jesus for money. How do you think Jesus felt? Terrible I am sure. Having someone whom you trust betray you is very disgusting and hurtful. It makes one sad.
On this Holy Week, an awful week for Jesus, we will remember his suffering. We will thank Jesus for what he has done for us and our family and our world.
Today we are glad but sad. We are sad but also glad.
Prayer: Jesus you suffered betrayal by a good friend. It must have hurt deeply. Thank you. Be near us as we walk the path of Holy Week. Amen.
