Big numbers
Children's sermon
Object:
a calculator
Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times." (v. 22)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have used a calculator before? (allow answers) We use calculators to do math for big numbers so that we don't make mistakes. What are some big numbers you know? (allow answers) Those are some pretty big numbers!
Our gospel today has some big numbers in it too. The gospel is about forgiveness. When we forgive someone, we decide not to be angry with them for bad things they have done. We decide to forget about their bad actions and focus on their good ones.
It can be hard to forgive but our Bible lesson today tells us that it is important. It says that we should forgive people a lot. In our lesson, the disciples ask Jesus how many times they should forgive people. Should they forgive people one time? Two times? No, Jesus says! Jesus tells them that they should forgive people not one or two times, not even seven times but 77 times! Wow! That's a pretty big number! We just about need a calculator for that one, don't you think? (allow answers)
Actually, we probably shouldn't use a calculator. Because you know what? Jesus didn't really mean 77 times. Jesus chose 77 because it was a big number but I bet he'd want us to forgive someone 78 times if we had to or even 79, or 80, or a 100! We don't need a calculator -- Jesus wants us to forgive others so many times that we lose count. He wants us to forgive others always, regardless of numbers. We don't need to keep score on forgiveness. Amen.
