The Big Test!
Children's sermon
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ (vv. 34-36)
Object: A noisemaker of some type. I used a little bell.
Note About the Test: There is no one right or wrong way to answer the questions in the test. The goal is to help the children hear the answers that reflect Matthew’s words that the people gave the hungry something to eat, gave the thirsty something to drink, invited in the stranger, gave clothes to the unclothed, looked after the sick, and visited the one in prison.
For Extra Fun: If you are giving this message in front of the rest of the congregation, you can add a bit more fun to the test by inviting everyone in the congregation to join the children in taking the test. Encourage everyone to shout out their answers and celebrate their correct answers. The children will enjoy the extra noise.
Hello, everyone! (Let them respond.) And Happy New Year! (Let them respond.) And since this is the first day of 2022, I have something REALLY special to help us celebrate the beginning of a new year. Something REALLY exciting and fun! Are you ready for it? (Let them respond.) Ok, great! I have a (pause) TEST! (Let them respond and have fun with it.)
Since we are beginning a new year, and since God wants us to do the things God wants us to do each day, I thought we would take a little test to see if we all understand just what God really wants us to do every day during this brand new year. So I have some questions to ask you, and if you answer them correctly, I will ring my bell and we can all clap our hands to celebrate. Are you ready for the big test? (Let them respond.) Okay then. I will ask a question about what you think God wants us to do, and you shout out the answer you think is the right one. If you are right, I’ll ring the bell and we can all clap our hands! Ready? Let’s go!
[If you are inviting the entire congregation to join in, do that now.]
What should we do if we see someone who is really hungry and has no food at all to eat? (Let them respond.) Yes! (Ring the bell and encourage everyone to clap.) If we see someone who is hungry, we should give them something to eat, shouldn’t we? Excellent! And now question number two.
What should we do if we see someone who is really thirsty and has nothing at all to drink? (Let them respond.) Yes! (Ring the bell and encourage everyone to clap.) If we see someone who is thirsty, we should give them something to drink! Very good!
What should we do if we see someone who is all alone outside in the cold and has no place to go to be warm and safe? (Let them respond.) Yes! (Ring the bell and encourage everyone to clap.) If we see someone who is all alone out in the cold, we should invite them inside to get warm. Outstanding!
What should we do if we see someone who has no clothes to wear? (Let them respond.) Yes! (Ring the bell and encourage everyone to clap.) If we see someone who has no clothes, we should give them something to wear, shouldn’t we? Awesome!
What should we do if we see someone who is really sick and has no one to take care of them? (Let them respond.) Yes! (Ring the bell and encourage everyone to clap.) If we see someone who is sick, we should do something to help them get better. Absolutely! And I have one more question for you.
What should we do if we see someone who is in prison and lonely and believes that no one at all cares about them? (Let them respond.) Yes! (Ring the bell and encourage everyone to clap.) If we see someone who is in prison and believes no one cares about them, we should visit them and let them know that we do care.
Congratulations! You passed the test with flying colors, and you are ready to do the things that God wants us to do to take care of each other during the coming year! How about another round of applause for your great work on the test! (Encourage everyone to clap.)
I hope you will remember how much God loves you, and how much God wants us to love other people and do as much as we can to help take care of those other people and make sure they know they are never, ever, alone.
Let’s have our prayer and ask God to help us remember to do the things God wants us to do to take care of each other.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for reminding us how much you love us. Please help us remember that you love all of the people you have created and help us let the people around us know that we love them just like Jesus loves us. Amen.
