"Blessed!"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Today's lesson talks about
"blessedness" or happiness. The sights, sounds, touches, and
tastes of Christmas are overwhelming for a child and the illusion
that many have is that these are the things that bring happiness.
They don't. True happiness, blessedness, comes from knowing
Jesus.
* Look up hymns in your hymnal that talk about "bless" or
"blessed" and cognates such as "joy" or "happy." Relate this
special kind of happiness to knowledge of Jesus.
* Read the story of Mary's visit to Elizabeth in a
children's Bible.
* Have the children draw pictures of Mary and Elizabeth's
visit. Ask the children, "What do the faces of 'blessed' people
look like?"
* Not everyone is happy at Christmas. Ask what your family
or class can do to help people spread the good cheer of knowing
Jesus.
* Sing happy Christmas carols. Teach the children motions.
If you don't know the movements to the songs, invent them.
Invite your family or class to invent motions to well-known
Christmas carols.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing Christmas hymns with the words "blessed," "cheer,"
"joy," and so forth in their titles. Briefly comment on the
blessedness of knowing Jesus and how this knowledge connects with
the hymn.
* Decorate your Advent or Christmas tree with the figures of
the holy family (except, of course, the Christ child).
