Blinded by Doubt? Call on Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
flashlight
The Point: Blinded by doubt or worry, call out to Jesus for sight
The Lesson: Welcome girls and boys. Thank you for joining me in this time of sharing Jesus. Today I brought with me a flashlight that we keep in the glove box of our car. I also have a flashlight by my bedside, in a kitchen drawer, and in my tool box. Now why would I have so many flashlights around? (let children answer) You are right because sometimes the lights don't work and sometimes you need to find something where the light doesn't reach. When those moments happen and you are blinded because of the darkness, it is great to be able to reach out and turn on a flashlight. With a flashlight in hand you are no longer blinded by the darkness.
Our Bible reading today tells us about a man who was blind. He couldn't see, but he heard the crowds going by him. He knew Jesus was in their midst so he called out, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
His name was Bartimaeus. He couldn't see with his eyes but he could see with his heart. His faith reached out to Jesus for sight. Jesus stopped but didn't give him a healing touch or word. Jesus just said, "Bartimaeus your faith has made you well."
Sometimes our eyes are okay but our hearts are in darkness because we doubt. When we are angry with someone and not willing to forgive, darkness will fill our lives. Then we need to learn from Bartimaeus and call out to Jesus "Jesus, have mercy on me!"
Calling out to Jesus is like grabbing a flashlight, the darkness is chased away. Jesus light's our way. Did you notice what Bartimaeus did after he could see? (let children answer) He followed Jesus. Call out to Jesus and his light will shine into your life. Follow him, and you will never be blind in your heart.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, thank you for giving Bartimaeus sight. We pray for the courage and the faith to call out to you when the darkness of doubt or worry fills our lives. May we follow you too. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
