A Box Of Forgiveness
Children's sermon
Object:
A box labeled “77 Forgivenesses”
...how often should I forgive?....seventy-seven times...(v. 21b, 21b)
Good morning boys and girls,
I'm really glad to see you this morning. I hope and I know that you will have a wonderful day today. I have a surprise for you. It's in this box. (shows box)
First, I am going to teach you about what's in this box. It's about the most important word in the entire bible, and in life, next to the word love. Have you heard of the word “forgiveness?”
Sure you have. Forgiveness is like deleting something on your computer. It's like erasing a word or a drawing on a white board. Forgiveness means “to let go.”
Sometimes it means saying “I'm sorry,” or “I apologize.”
One day Jesus told a “once upon a time story.” A man was forgiven a big debt from a king. But then this man who had this enormous debt of money forgiven from the king, turned around and refused to forgive a few pennies from his neighbor. When the king heard about this, he was not happy. The forgiven man failed to pass on forgiveness to his neighbor.
Jesus' disciple, Peter, asked Jesus how many times should a person forgive someone.
Seven times? In the Bible seven is considered the perfect number.
Jesus expanded forgiveness by saying 77.
Imagine 77 forgivenesses in this box.
When someone hurts you or insults you or bullies you, and then is sorry, you can borrow a forgiveness from a forgiveness box.
You don't have to carry a grudge or be mad forever. Because God has forgiven you through Jesus life, death, and resurrection, you can pass forgiveness on.
Take a bunch of forgivenesses along today and pass them on.
Prayer: Jesus as you have forgiven me help me to forgive others. Amen.
