Breakfast At The Beach
Children's sermon
Object:
Fish and Bread (real or representations)
“It is the Lord!”(v. 7a)
Good Morning boys and girls,
How many of you have ever gone fishing? (children respond)
How many of you would like to go fishing? (children respond)
(presenter may tell his/her own fishing experience)
After Jesus was raised from the dead, his disciples decided to go fishing.
Fishing was their occupation. One day, they were at the Sea of Tiberius fishing, but had no luck. Along comes Jesus. He sees their dilemma. He suggests they throw their nets on the other side of the boat. The disciples do as Jesus bids them and suddenly they catch an enormous school of fish. They are large fish and many – 153 in all!
The disciples then realize, it's Jesus alive! Simon Peter blurts out, “It is the Lord.”
Jesus then invites the disciples for breakfast. They cook fish. They share bread.
Children do you remember the time when Jesus hosted the Last Supper? (children respond) (presenter may review the Last Supper)
This morning, Jesus invites the disciples to his First Breakfast. It's Breakfast at the Beach. And when the disciples see that Jesus shares bread and fish with them, they realize, even more fully, that Jesus is really, really, raised from the dead. This breakfast is like a sacrament. (presenter explains simply about a sacrament) Jesus always reveals himself in a sacrament.
Then Jesus asks Simon Peter if he loves him? Three times Jesus asks that question.
Each time, Jesus who had just shared his First Breakfast with Peter and the others, tells Peter, “feed my lambs, tend the sheep, feed my sheep.”
Can you children think of situations where God's people come together and eat? (children respond) Is Jesus present when we eat together? (children respond)
Prayer: Jesus, we thank you for the Last Supper and for that First Breakfast. You always show up when believers share bread, wine and fish. Amen.
