Building Together!
Children's sermon
Object:
A handful of building blocks, like Legos® or similar blocks. Begin with just one block in your hand and keep the rest hidden until later.
For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. (v. 15)
Hello everyone. I’ll bet you can tell me what this is that I have in my hand, can’t you? (Let them answer) That’s right, it’s a building block. And it is a great one, too! Take a close look at it. (Hold it out for them to see or pass it around) Isn’t this a great building block? (Let them answer) In fact, I think it is probably a perfect building block! Whoever made it, really did a good job, don’t you think? (Let them answer)
This block reminds me of something that Jesus said one day. It was something that kind of confused his disciples, and you know, it still confuses people today. He was trying to help his Disciples understand how they were supposed to behave. He looked at them and said that whenever two or three of them got together, he would be right there with them. He wanted them to know that, even after he was gone and not walking around with them anymore, whenever they got together and thought of him, he would still be there with them to help them. Does that make sense to you? (Let them answer)
Well, it confused some people. They thought Jesus meant that the only time God would be with them was when they were with other people. If someone was all by themselves somewhere, God would not be with them. That sounds kind of sad to me, does it sound that way to you? (Let them answer) I mean, sometimes we have to be alone; like maybe when we go to bed, or maybe when we are outside walking around or playing. Can you think of other times someone might be alone? (Let them answer) Do you think Jesus really meant that if we are all by ourselves somewhere, God is not with us? (Let them answer)
No, I don’t think that’s what Jesus meant, and I think my little block here can remind me what Jesus was really trying to say. Because this is a great little block someone created all by itself isn’t it? (Let them answer) And we are all great people that God has created, all by ourselves, aren’t we? (Let them answer) But, you know, I don’t think this block was created so we could just look at it. Why do you think it was created? (Let them answer) Yes, it was created so we could build things with it. As great as my little block is, it becomes greater we put it with other blocks. (Bring out the other blocks and dump them together) I mean, wow! Now I can use my one little block with the other blocks and really build things. (Build a little tower or something to show) My one little block is just perfect all by itself, but when I put it with other blocks, they can all work together to create some really great things. That’s why they were all created.
I think that’s what Jesus was wanting his disciples to know and wants us to know now. God created each one of us, and loves each one of us, and is always with us no matter where we are. But, when we get together with other people who believe in God, we can do even greater things than we can do all on our own. Does that make sense? (Let them answer)
When we get together, we don’t do it because we have to be together to make sure God is with us, but we come together so we can all work together to do the great things that God created us to do. We are like this little block (Hold up the one block) It’s a great little block. But when we put all of the blocks together (Mix the blocks together) now we can really do the things the block was created to do. And when we get together, we can do the things that God created us to do. Thank you for being here and helping me be the person God wants me to be!
Prayer:
God, thank you for creating me, and loving me, and being with me no matter where I am. And thank you for creating all of us, and for bringing us together so we can do all of the great things that you created us to do.
