Calming the storm
Children's sermon
Object:
a hug
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever been
hugged by someone? (Let them answer and as you do, demonstrate a
hug to yourself or to one of the children.) Hugs make you feel
good, don't they? They make you feel good especially when
something is going wrong.
I want to tell you a story about a girl about your age who was having a very bad week. You could say that many stormy events were happening to the girl. When someone tells you that there are many storms in his life that means that very bad things are happening to the person.
The first terrible thing that happened was a friend of the girl had a birthday, and the little girl wasn't invited to the party. The next terrible thing that happened was that another friend told the girl that the two were no longer best friends. The next terrible thing that happened was at the supper table. The little girl spilled her drink all over herself. Then her mom and dad came to her. They each gave her a big hug. They said, "Don't worry about all these things. You'll be okay." Soon after that, things started to become better for the girl. The storms in her life disappeared.
This same thing happened to Jesus' disciples. The disciples were on a boat. Suddenly a real storm appeared on the lake. The disciples were worried. Jesus was in the boat asleep. The disciples woke Jesus. He could see that they were worried. He told the disciples not to worry about the storm. Then the storm went away. The disciples felt better. It was as if Jesus gave the disciples a big hug.
The next time you see someone who has a storm in his life, remember what Jesus did. He calmed the person who was worrying. You could do that too, by giving the person a big hug. Remember when you have storms in your life, ask Jesus to help you. He can make the storms go away.
