Can you carry the cross?
Children's Activity
Object:
What does it mean to put Christ first? What does it mean to carry his cross? How can we walk in Christ's footsteps and live like him?
There are other hard questions brought up in today's reading. Do I really have to give up all my possessions (verse 33)? What does it mean to hate my father, mother, wife, children, brother, sister? Do I have to do that in order to be a disciple? Or does it simply mean that nothing should get in the way of our devotion to God?
As a family, how can you encourage each other to put Christ first? Try playing a game together. On several index cards, write down some things you think Christ wants us to do (e.g. pray for people, give to others, be patient, teach about God). Put down some hard ones too (e.g. sacrifice for others, pray for enemies, love those who hate us). Add as many ideas as you can.
Once you've done that, put the cards in a pile. Have someone draw one, read it out loud and then talk about a time when doing that thing was difficult. Go through all the cards. When you're done, say a prayer and ask God to give you the strength to follow Jesus in all that you do.
