Catching people
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Children need to learn early that God
expects us to reach out to other people with the Good News of
salvation in Jesus Christ. This Gospel text gives us the
opportunity to show them that Jesus directed his disciples and,
through them, us to catch people for God.
*Ask the children to make a list of the friends that they
have who do not attend church. When they have finished, put the
total up on the board or easel. Then talk about how wonderful it
would be if we could bring all these other children to church.
Discuss with them methods they can use to invite these children,
and see if you can get them to commit to asking at least one
child to come to church. If any of the children say that they
don't know if their friends attend a church, discuss with them
how they can bring the subject up to their friends and find out.
*Display a bunch of candy or something else the children
would like to have and then call one child aside and tell him/her
that anybody who says the name "Jesus" before the class is over
today will receive one of the items that you have on display. Let
them return to their seats and see what happens. If the child
shares the information, you will have many children saying the
name "Jesus" and you can use that to show how the gospel message
is spread. If the child doesn't tell anyone, you can use that to
show that the gospel message will not spread if we remain silent
about the Good News.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Read the Gospel text and ask the children to tell you how
Peter and the others caught people for God. Show them some sort
of prize that you will award next week to the child who brings
the most people to Sunday school.
