This changes everything!
Children's sermon
Object:
a complete Bible and a New Testament
Before Jesus, God especially spoke to certain men and women.
They were called "prophets." That was how God got the word out
to people. God used the prophets to get the news out. Most of
our Bible is about how God spoke to the people long ago. Does
anyone know what we call that part of the Bible that spoke to
people long ago? (Let them answer.) We call that part of the
Bible the "Old Testament." You can see from where I put my
finger in the Bible that the Old Testament takes up most of the
Bible! (Show them the Old Testament and New Testament portions
of the Bible.)
But when Jesus came, everything changed. Jesus was not a prophet like Isaiah or Jeremiah or Amos. Jesus didn't just speak God's word -- Jesus was God's own son. Jesus was God's own "word" who spoke to us through his ministry and now through what the writers wrote about him. What part of the Bible is this? (Let them answer.) The New Testament! It was God's new way of speaking to the people of the world.
There is another way we use to tell how things are different now. Sometimes you will find the year with the letters "A.D." written on it. (If you have an example of such a year, show this to the children now.) Before Jesus lived, the time is called "B.C." That means "Before Christ." So you see even history is divided by the arrival of Jesus.
Jesus was a human being like you and me, and yet Jesus was also God. That made him very different from the prophets who were always just human beings. Some of the prophets of God could do great things, but they were not God like Jesus is God.
So Jesus changed the writing of the Bible. He changed the way we count time, but Jesus changes something even more important. Jesus changes you and me. He helps us understand God's love for us. Jesus helps us understand God. Jesus is still alive and Jesus lives with us. I'm so glad we have Jesus with us even today. In fact, let's talk to Jesus right now as we bow our heads to pray.
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for changing the Bible, time, and us. Thank you for being with us and in us. Amen.
