Children of God
Children's sermon
Object:
items with your name on it (e.g. birth certificate, driver's license, credit card)
The Point: In Jesus we find our true identity.
The Lesson: Good morning boys and girls. Thank you for sharing this time with me.
Who am I? (let children answer) You are right -- that is my name. I brought several things that have my name on them. Each one helps to reveal who I am. This is my birth certificate. You can see the year that I was born. Then you can figure out how old I am. This is my driver's license. Now you know that I can legally drive a car. If you look closely, you can also learn where I live. This is my seminary degree and my ordination certificate. They reveal to you that I was trained for pastoral ministry and that I have been approved by the church to lead a congregation. I have all kinds of other things with my name and they reveal yet other information about who I am: a marriage certificate, credit cards, a checkbook, a telephone directory, and so on.
Even with all these items pointing out who I am, you still do not truly know me.
Jesus didn't have his name on things. Still people knew things about him. He was from Nazareth. His parents were Mary and Joseph. Like his father he was a carpenter. People knew Jesus was a faithful man because he always went to worship. He understood God's word better than anyone else. And as Jesus preached and healed people, his followers understood that he was a man of God, and God was speaking through him. They "thought" they knew Jesus.
Then one day Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a mountain. Suddenly Jesus' appearance became dazzling white and the great men of God, Elijah and Moses, were with them. Truly, Jesus was a man of God. But they still didn't know Jesus, not until a voice from a cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, listen to him."
Jesus is God's Son. We are to follow his directions for our lives.
I have one other item with my name on it that will help you to know me. It is my baptismal certificate. You see, I am a child of God, forgiven, restored, and loved by God. To know that about me or you is to know everything.
Closing Prayer: Together let us unite our hands and hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, you truly are the Son of God. Help us to listen to your guidance and to follow your way. May we find our identity in your grace as children of God. Amen.
