“...but one who is more powerful than I is coming..” (V. 16a)
Good morning girls, good morning boys!
My, it’s so fun to see you today. Happy Advent! Know why I (say, sing, shout, chant) Happy Advent? (children may respond)
Advent means “a coming.” Something or somebody is coming. Just around the corner. Know what it is? (children respond)
Yep. It’s Christmas, and John the Baptist is here to help. (show sketch)
Let’s see how close we are to Christmas. (show calendar) Let’s count and mark each day.
(draw an X on the third Sunday of Advent and do a countdown until Christmas)
Okay we are ____days until Christmas. Are you ready to celebrate Jesus’ birth?
John the Baptist told the people that Jesus’ appearance is getting closer and closer.
He told them, “I am not Jesus. I am not Messiah. I am only a voice telling everybody to get ready for Jesus.” The people asked how? How can we get ready for the coming Jesus? John replied, “Do good things to show that you are sorry for your sins.” “Tax collectors, be fair. Soldiers, use no forcible pressure, and be content.”
Now since we are getting closer and closer to Christmas according to the calendar, what is the best way for children to get closer and closer to the spirit of Christmas? (children may have answers)
Here’s a “John the Baptist” questionnaire: (children respond to each question)
1 - Because of God’s grace, we pray about getting or giving to others?
2 - Because of God’s love, we steal or we share with others?
3 - Because we are blessed, we are content or contrary?
4 - As children of God, we are haughty or humble?
5 - Baptized and saved, we are nice or naughty?
Great job! What fun! We are busy getting closer and closer to Christmas in many ways.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the John the Baptists in our lives, helping us get closer and closer to you. Amen.
