Coloring a Story
Children's sermon
Object:
a box of crayons
“all spoke well of him....they were filled with rage.” (vs. 22, 28)
Good morning boys and girls,
How are you this morning? (children answer) Ask me how I am and I would say ______________. Thank you for joining me for this message I have just for you.
I have a question. What is your favorite color? (children respond)
My favorite is ___________. Here's why. ______________.
Anybody like to color with crayons like these? (show box of crayons)
Let's pretend stories are like a box of crayons. (show 3 crayons)
Sunny Yellow shines happy. Peachy Pink hugs warm and loving. Blood red drips anger. So we have Sunny Yellow, Peachy Pink, and Blood Red.
I see these colors in today's story from the bible. (read key verses or post on white board) Jesus is speaking in the synagogue in Nazareth. What color describes, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Sunny Yellow) What color represents, “all spoke well of him as his gracious words that came from his mouth?” (Peachy Pink)
What color describes, “When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage.” (Blood Red) Next what color should we use for, “But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way?” (Sunny Yellow)
Jesus experienced admiration, love, puzzlement, and outright anger at the synagogue that day because he told the truth. His message that God uses outsiders besides just the Jews, made the Jews mad. Blood red was in their hearts when they drove him out of town. But Jesus had more ministry work to do. So he disappears.
Have you ever had people love you and then get mad at you? (children discuss)
What color does God use to picture you?
What crayon will you use to color others?
Prayer: Dear Jesus, even though the people got mad at you that day, remind us that you still loved them, prayed for them and died for them. Amen.
