Confidence
Children's sermon
Object:
a trophy, a merit badge, a grade card with all S's or A's
Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus.... (v. 19)
Good morning, boys and girls. Is there one person here this morning that can explain the word "confidence"? That is C-O-N-F-I -D-E-N-C-E, confidence. It is a big word but it means something pretty important. Does anyone want to take a guess? (let them answer)
Maybe I can explain a little better if I show you some of the things I brought with me this morning. (hold up the trophy) Does anyone have one of these? (let them answer) What is this? (let them answer) That's right, this is a trophy. I won this trophy for being the best golfer [piano player, pie maker, speller] one weekend. Do you know how good I felt when I won this prize? I felt great! I felt really good and I could hardly wait to play the next time. This trophy gave me confidence that I could be the best golfer once in a while. Now, I just love the game.
I brought something else that I found at home. (hold up the merit badge) This doesn't belong to me, but it is what? (let them answer) That's right, it is a merit badge. Do any of you have a merit badge? (let them answer) How did you feel when you received it? (let them answer) What was your merit badge for? (let them answer) Great, so now you think you can [tie the best knots in the whole world, or whatever the badge was for]. You have confidence.
Finally, I brought something that we all get when we go to school. What do we call this? (let them answer) Perfect, it is a grade card. When you look inside and you see that you have all S's or many A's, how do you feel? (let them answer) That's right, you have confidence.
Confidence is important to all of us. When we have confidence, we are willing to try and do things that we have not done before. We work harder when we have confidence, we study harder, and we play harder. Confidence is a great word. Let's everybody say, "I have confidence!" (let them say it)
There is something else you can have confidence about. The Bible says that we can talk about heaven and God's kingdom with confidence. And the confidence is not from something that we have done but our confidence is that Jesus died for our sins and has made us children of God. Jesus has given all of us confidence that we are going to be a part of the new world that he has made for us. What a great word -- confidence.
The next time you think about heaven and all of the great things God is planning for us, say a prayer of thanks to Jesus because he made it possible for us to have confidence that we will be with him in heaven. Amen.
