A Crown or a Broom?
Children's sermon
Object:
a crown and a broom
The Point: If you are truly great you will be a servant to all.
The Lesson: Good morning boys and girls. I really enjoy having you come forward to share this time together. Thank you.
This morning I brought two items with me: a crown and a broom. Who wears a crown? (get responses) That is right, a king. A king is someone who rules with authority and power over other people. The crown is a sign of his or her power.
Who uses a broom? (get responses) Yes, someone who wants to sweep a room or clean a floor. Do you think a king would sweep? (get responses) Probably not. The king would have a servant do the sweeping.
Which would you like: a crown or a broom? (get responses) Having a crown won't make you a king. But having a broom could make people appreciate you and give thanks for your service as you use the broom.
In fact, Jesus tells us in our lesson that if we really want to be a king we need to be a servant to all. To Jesus our greatness comes not from our power or might but from being a helper to others. Sweeping a floor, washing a dish, making a bed, helping in anyway, means we are thinking about others and not ourselves. That makes us great in God's eyes. Jesus once said that he came not to rule over us but to be a servant to all. If we really want to be great, then we should follow the example that Jesus gave us and be a servant to all.
Closing Prayer: I think we should pray about being an example. Let us hold hands and unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, you came to serve us all so that we might know God's love for us, and so that we might follow your example in caring for others. Help us be servants to others. Jesus, in your name we pray. Amen.
