A daughter/son of God
Children's sermon
Object:
A card that says "I am ___________"
Now, I know your names, but I'm going to ask you to tell me
one after another who you are. When I hold up this card, tell me
your name. Say "I am (name)." Okay? Let's do it. (Do it.)
One day some people went to see a man whose name as John the Baptist and asked him who he was. He didn't say to them, "I am John." Instead he said this: "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord.' " Wow! That sure is different! Does anyone have any idea why John would answer like that? (Let them answer.)
John the Baptist was a man sent from God to prepare the way for Jesus to come. Some people thought he might be the Messiah, but he told them he was not. He was only the one preparing the way for the Messiah. And that is what John did.
Because he prepared the way for Jesus, Jesus came to make us his own children. Not only are we (repeat the names of the children), but we are also daughters and sons of God. Now, I am going to hold up this card again. This time, instead of telling me just your name, tell me your name and then say, "I am also a daughter of God" or "I am also a son of God." (Do it.) You are daughters and sons of God.
John the Baptist was the one who made the way for Jesus. We are the ones who follow the way of Jesus. Because of that we are all daughters and sons of God.
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for John the Baptist who made the way for Jesus. Thank you for Jesus who made us daughters and sons of God. Amen.
