Children's sermon
Object:
A coin to flip.
Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Hello, everyone! (Let them respond.) Are you ready for our story today? (Let them respond.) Great, let’s go.
This is a story about something that happened after the baby Jesus was born. We don’t know how long it was after that first Christmas, but we know that Jesus and his mom and dad were still in Bethlehem, because that’s where the three men found them. The men had traveled a long way from their home to see the baby. Can anyone tell me how the three men knew how to find the baby Jesus? (Let them respond.) They followed a star that was in the sky, didn’t they? The men believed that a new king was going to be born, and they saw a very bright star they believed would show them where the baby was, so they went in that direction.
Back then, there was a law that said if anyone important visited another country, they were supposed to stop and meet the king of that country to get permission to visit. So, when the men got to Israel, they went to visit King Herod and told him why they had come there. King Herod was really nice to them and said he was excited about seeing the new king too. King Herod told the three men to go ahead, and when they found the baby, they needed to come back and tell him where the baby was so he could go see him too.
So, the three men followed the star, and who remembers where the star lead them? (Let them respond.) They followed the star to Bethlehem, didn’t they? And that’s where they found the baby Jesus. The story says the three men were overjoyed, and they gave the baby gifts they had brought with them.
And then the three men had a difficult decision to make. What were they supposed to do after they found the baby? (Let them respond.) They were supposed to go back and tell King Herod where the baby was, weren’t they? (Let them respond.) But the men knew that Herod was tricky, and sometimes he did some really bad things. They were afraid of what Herod might do to the baby if he knew where he was. But they were also worried about what Herod might do to them if they didn’t go back and tell him. They had a tough decision to make, didn’t they? (Let them respond.)
Sometimes decisions can be really hard, can’t they? (Let them respond.) Maybe we see people picking on someone, and we need to decide if we are going to do it too, or if we are going to be nice to that person. Or maybe we see something that isn’t ours, but we really like it, and we want to just take it. Or maybe we are angry with someone and we want to say something really mean to them.
When we have one of those really hard choices, how do we decide what we are going to do? (Let them respond.) Well, maybe we could just flip a coin? (Show the coin.) We could flip it up in the air (Flip the coin) and say, “If its heads, I’ll be nice to the person and if its tails, I’ll act like the other people are acting.” Or maybe we’ll say (Flip the coin,) “If its heads, I’ll steal the toy, and if its tails I won’t steal it.”
Is that the best way to make those difficult decisions? (Let them respond.) No, I don’t think so either. What is a better way to decide? (Let them respond.) The best way would be for us to figure out what God wants us to do, and then just do that, isn’t it?
And how do we figure out what God wants us to do? (Let them respond.) We remember that Jesus said God wants us to love each other and take care of each other, and we shouldn’t do things that might hurt someone else.
The three men knew that Herod could be tricky and might do something to hurt the baby, so they did not go back to tell him where Jesus was. They made a tough decision. They didn’t flip a coin (Show the coin again.) They did the thing they believed God wanted them to do and just went back home.
I hope you will remember how much God loves you, and how much God wants us to love other people and make decisions that help take care of other people and not do anything that might hurt them.
Let’s have our prayer and ask God to help us remember to do the things God wants us to do to take care of each other.
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for reminding us how much you love us. Please help us remember that you love all of the people you have created and help us let the people around us know that we love them just like Jesus loves us. Amen.
