Doing The Unpleasant
Children's sermon
Object:
Stinky socks and sneakers inside a bag
I have a surprise in my bag today but I'm not sure if any of you would like to see it. You see... (pull it out of the bag) I have some stinky socks and sneakers. Hold your noses! It's not very pleasant.
In our story today we can take a peek into the life of Jesus. He did something that many people would have turned the other way and tried to have held their noses. It says in John 13:4,5
"Jesus got up from the meal, ... he poured water in a basin (bowl) and began to wash his disciples' feet. Drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him."
Even though Jesus was the Son of God, he was willing to do a very lowly job. He was willing to serve others. Jesus had a humble heart. Are we willing to do dishes, mop floors, pull weeds, take out trash or change diapers? All of these things may not be pleasant just like feet and smelly socks are not so wonderful. But we need to be humble and be more concerned about others and how we can serve them.
Stay alert for opportunities to serve. It may not look like an important job but in God's eyes, it is important. Jesus gave us a promise about this... sort of like a guarantee. It says in John 13:17... "You will be blessed (happy) if you do them (these acts of serving).
How Do We Apply This to Our Lives?
Don't wait for someone else to do the dirty work but be the first to jump in and be willing to help out. When something gets spilled, be the first one to grab the paper towels and clean it up. If mom asks you to clean the toilet or sweep the floor, do it without having to be asked more than once. Jesus is our example!
