Don't cheat!
Children's sermon
Object:
a catechism or other religious instruction book
Good morning! Jesus once told us about a man who was a
cheater, a dishonest person. Do you think that God wants us to be
cheaters? (Let them answer.) No, of course he doesn't. He wants
us to be fair and honest. Some of you are in school and you take
tests. Is there some way you could cheat on those tests? (Let
them answer.)
We all know that it is not good to cheat on tests or
anything else. It's always best to be honest. That's what God
expects from us. Now, let's see how that might work right here.
Let's pretend that you came up here today to take a test. We'll
say that the test is on the Ten Commandments. Does anyone know
all the Ten Commandments? (Let them answer. If there are older
children some may know all ten.) Okay, most of you don't (or none
of you do), so you wouldn't be able to pass the test. But, look
at what I have here. This is a catechism. Inside this little
book, all the commandments are listed. Now, if you were really
taking a test and you had this little book in your pocket, you
could sneak a look at the book when I wasn't watching and get the
answers, couldn't you? ... BUT, that would be cheating! It would
not be fair to look in the book if you were taking a test to see
how well you KNEW the Ten Commandments, would it? (Let them
answer.)
Well, we're not giving a test today, but you will take a lot
of tests in school and we would like you to remember that
cheating is a bad thing. God wants you to be honest and fair.
Will you always try to be that? (Let them answer.)
Good. Let's say a prayer to ask God to help us.
Dearest God: Please give us the strength and the courage to be
honest people who will not cheat. We know that's what You want us
to be. Amen.
