Enriched
Children's sermon
Object:
a bag of enriched flour
… For in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind. (v. 5)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have ever helped someone bake? (allow answers) What have you helped bake? (allow answers) When we bake, we use lots of ingredients. One of these ingredients may be flour. In fact, I brought some flour with me today. What kinds of things might you use flour in? (allow answers) We use flour in lots of things! We use flour in cakes, cookies, muffins, bread, pancakes -- just about everything we bake uses flour.
The flour I have with me today is special flour. It is called "enriched" flour. Does anyone know what the word "enriched" means? (allow answers) "Enriched" means that the people in the flour factory have added extra vitamins and nutrients to the flour to make it healthier. How many of you take vitamins every morning? (allow answers) When we take vitamins, we are making sure that we get all the vitamins and nutrients that we need to stay healthy. Vitamins and nutrients help keep us from getting sick, help our bones and bodies grow, and help us have more energy. When people make enriched flour, they are making flour that helps people lead better, happier, healthier lives.
Our second reading today uses the word "enriched." The reading is a letter written by Saint Paul. Paul says that Christians have lives "enriched" by God. What do you think he means by that? (allow answers) Paul is telling us that God makes our lives better! What are some ways that you think God can make our lives better? (allow answers)
God could make our lives better by doing miracles for us, but that's not what Paul is talking about. God makes our everyday lives better in a way that seems ordinary. When we are followers of God, it gives us someone in whom to put our trust. That's important! When we are children, we can put our trust in our parents. But when we grow older, we have to rely on ourselves to do many things that our parents used to do. When we grow up, we have to learn how to make our own meals and clean our own home. Sometimes all the responsibilities of being an adult can be overwhelming! But if we have someone in whom we can put our trust -- God -- we know that we can handle everything that comes our way. God enriches our lives because he lets us put our trust in something stronger than ourselves. He lets us put our trust in him! And that is good news indeed! Amen.
