a stuffed alien
You are witnesses of these things. (v. 48)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we are going to talk about aliens. How many of you have seen a movie with an alien in it? (allow answers) What did the alien look like? (allow answers) Did it look like the one I have here? (allow answers)
Does anyone actually know what aliens look like? (allow answers) No, they don't. Although lots of people believe that there are aliens out there, somewhere, in the universe, we don't know for sure. We don't know if anyone has ever actually seen an alien. No one has taken a real photograph of an alien.
But some people really, really believe in aliens. Some people go to conventions to meet other people who believe in aliens; some people write about aliens on the internet. Although these people have never seen an alien, they have faith that aliens are out there -- somewhere that we can't see.
We have to admire the faith that these people have. Even though sometimes we might think they're crazy, they have strong faith. As Christians, we know about faith. We are taught to believe in God, who we have never seen, and Jesus, who lived long before our ancestors were born.
But the difference between our faith and the faith of people who look for aliens is that we have proof of Jesus. God sent him to earth to reassure us that God was there and still cared for us. The New Testament is our proof that God is with us -- that he was with us then and that he will be with us forever. The way the New Testament tells us this is by telling us about the miracles that Jesus performed while he was on earth, and by telling us the story of his life, death, and resurrection.
Unfortunately, even though we have the New Testament to tell us that God is real, sometimes it is hard for us to believe. We look around at the bad things that happen in the world and wonder if God exists. But we need to remember all the good things that happen in the world, too. Every day, millions of people do kind things to show God's love to others. And if all else fails, we just need to take a look at alien enthusiasts to remind us what blind faith looks like. Amen.
