Faith in Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a stepladder
The Point: put your faith in the right place
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls, for coming up to share this time together. I want to begin by asking you a question. If you are home and there is something you want but it is too high for you reach, what would you do? (let children answer) You can ask for help from your mother or father or sister or brother if they are taller than you. I bet that many of you would just pull a chair over and stand on it to reach what you want. Is using a chair a good idea? (let children answer) A chair is not made to be used as a stepladder. It is to sit on. When you stand on a chair it could tip over and then you would fall and hurt yourself. You shouldn't put your trust in something that isn't made for the task. What should you use? (let children answer) How about a stepladder?
Perhaps you can use the stepladder I brought from home. It was made for someone to stand on. It has three steps so that you can easily and safely reach higher. It was designed so that you won't tip when you are standing on it. You can trust a stepladder to reach up higher because it was made for that purpose.
In our reading from Matthew, we are told about a mother whose daughter was very ill. She couldn't help her daughter so she went to Jesus for help. She believed that Jesus came to make a difference in her daughter's life. Her trust that Jesus was the one who could help caused her to not give up seeking Jesus. Jesus told the mother that her faith was great. She had put her faith, her trust, in the right person. Jesus came to make a difference in our lives.
When you need to reach higher to get something in your home, trust a stepladder. It was built for that purpose. When you need to find happiness, hope, joy, and peace in life, trust in Jesus. He came that we might feel his love for us. Jesus came to love us and help us when life is difficult and hurting. In fact Jesus wants us all to have the kind of faith this mother had... a great faith in him.
Closing Prayer: Let us unite our hearts together in prayer: Jesus sometimes life seems difficult and out of reach to us. Sometimes we are not happy and we feel alone. Sometimes we trust the wrong thing and put our faith in ourselves instead of you. Help us, Jesus, to have faith in you alone so that we may have a great faith too. Jesus in your name we pray. Amen.
