See what love the Father has given us that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (v. 1)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we are going to talk about families. Can each of you tell me one word that describes a family? (allow answers) There are lots of words we use to talk about families. Sometimes the words we use to describe our own families are different from the words we use to describe other peoples' families. It's okay that we use different words to describe our families. After all, every family is different!
Many families are connected because they are all related to each other, but some families are not. Sometimes families include stepparents, who might take care of children who they are not related to. Sometimes families include foster children, who are just staying with a family that is not related to them for a short time because they have no relatives who can take care of them. Or families can include adopted children, who are not related to their parents but who live with their parents permanently and who are cared for and loved by them. Sometimes we call people who are not related to us "aunt" or "uncle" if they are close friends of our family. Sometimes we are closer to our neighbors than we are to family who lives far away.
Sometimes families are not made up of just people who are related to each other. Families can also be a group of people who love and care for each other. In fact, we are all part of a family like that. Did you know that? Did you know that you are a part of a huge family of people who all care about each other -- and who aren't all related? (allow answers) That family is our church family.
We call ourselves a church family because God, our Father, calls us his children. We are all loved by God as if he were our parent. He wants what is best for us! We are as brothers and sisters with all God's other children. God wants what is best for each and every one of us. He doesn't play favorites. We are all equally his sons and daughters.
Remember that this week. God created people and God loves each and every one of us as if we were his own child. This week treat others as if they were your family: show them kindness, respect, and God's love! Amen.
