Flavor the World with Love
Children's sermon
Object:
salt shaker and unsalted popcorn
The Point: A world with love in it is a much better world
The Lesson: Welcome girls and boys. I appreciate your coming up to share this time with me. I what to try an experiment with you this morning. You are to be my judges. First I want you to taste this popcorn (share popcorn). Everyone please take a small handful and then eat it. I made the popcorn. Did you like the taste? (let children answer) If you could would you like to eat more of it?
I also brought with me a salt shaker (show shaker). The popcorn you ate didn't have any salt on it. Now I am going to shake some salt on the popcorn. Take another small handful and taste it. Did you like the taste? (let children answer) Can you see the salt? Can you taste the salt? Which of the two popcorns you ate did you like the best?
The popcorn with salt added is clearly the winner. Thank you of sharing in my little experiment. From our reading today Jesus is showing us the experiment. Jesus wants us to be salt in the world. He doesn't mean salt like in this shaker. Jesus means that as salt makes popcorn better to eat and more enjoyable, we are to make the world a better place to live. You and I are to flavor the world. When you are kind and gentle you are flavoring the world. When you are caring and do what your parents ask, you are flavoring your family and world too. When you pray and tell your friends about Jesus, you are like salt that brings light and joy to the world. When you love your family and friends and others, you flavor the world with the presence of Jesus. Isn't it exciting to know that when you love others you are making the world a much better place?
Popcorn with salt is a lot more fun to eat. The salt makes all the difference. The world with love in it makes all the difference. So every day shake a little love from your heart into the world, and I promise you it will make all the difference.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Lord Jesus, your love has come into our lives to forgive us and to flavor us as children of God. Your love, Jesus, has made all the difference. With the gift your Holy Spirit help us each day to share your love with others that the world maybe come a better place. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
