“I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” (v. 51a)
Hello Children,
It's so good to see you this morning. How are you? Anybody hungry? Did you have breakfast this morning? Let's talk about food. (children respond) What is your favorite food? Mine is _________.
There's a story about food in the Old Testament.
Jesus mentioned that story about food when he talked to the crowds one day. He referred to a time when the Israelites were in the wilderness for 40 years. After a time they got hungry. They ran out of food. So the Israelites got cranky. They grumbled and complained to Moses their leader. Moses prayed to God and God provided an amazing food. It was called manna. Ever heard of manna before? (children respond)
Jesus told the crowd that the manna the people of Israel ate was free and good but it was only good for the day. So if anybody tried to stock up on a lot of manna it wouldspoil. This daily gift of food helped the people to learn to depend upon God each day for their provisions.
Jesus goes on to say that he is the living bread from heaven which never spoils or gets moldy. This figure of speech teaches them and us that Jesus is like forever bread. Forever bread never gets old -- but is always fresh and tasty.
When you go to the store to buy food from the shelves, many foods are dated.
That means they have a “shelf life” for only so long.
Does Jesus, the living bread from heaven, have a shelf life? (children respond)
No, no Jesus is our forever bread. Isn't that amazing?
Next time you eat a slice of bread just say a prayer of thanks. Thanks for shelf life bread and God's forever bread in Jesus.
Prayer: Dear Lord, you are the forever bread. You are always new and fresh.
Thank you. Amen.
