Forgetting
Children's sermon
Object:
cue cards (perhaps containing today's verse)
These are called "cue cards" and people use them for several
purposes. When I was a student in college, I used them a lot to
help me remember things. Sometimes when there is a play, someone
will stand off to the side with "cue cards" that tell the actor
what the next line is. Cue cards help us remember.
There are times to remember and times to forget. The Apostle Paul tells about forgetting. It is good, for example, to forget about bad things in the past we may have done and can do nothing about in the future.
In his earlier life, the Apostle Paul tried to save himself. He did everything he could to earn God's favor. He wanted to please God much the way we sometimes want to please adults. He learned that he could not please God because we win God's favor only by trusting in Jesus, who is God's son. So Paul learned to forget what he had tried to do in the past because it would not help him now. It was all wasted time and effort.
Now Paul focused on the present and future with Jesus. Today we learn about Jesus, and tomorrow and in the future Jesus will be a big part of your life. That is what is important.
If we do wrong things and feel guilty about them, we only have to let Jesus have those things because Jesus wants us to be free and forget things like that -- leave them in the past.
I'm glad our God is a God who is interested in the present moment and the future, aren't you?
