"For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God." (v. 10)
Good morning, boys and girls! Today we're going to talk about foundations. Can anyone tell me what a foundation is? (allow answers) A foundation is something you build on. It's like the ground layer of something. How many of you like to build with building blocks? (allow answers) When you build, you have a flat piece you use as the foundation for your buildings. How many of you know someone who wears makeup? (allow answers) When people wear makeup, they start with a layer of powder that is called "foundation." All the other makeup goes on top of that first layer. If you're decorating a cake, you might use a cake stand as your foundation. There are different ways we use foundations. Foundations are important. What can you think of that uses a foundation? (allow answers)
When people hear "foundation," they think of a house. Houses are built on concrete foundations. If you have a bad foundation, your house won't be straight! If the foundation is damaged, it might be condemned -- that means the house is not safe to live in. It's dangerous to be in a building with a poor foundation!
Sometimes we talk about foundations when we talk about our faith. People might talk about what their faith is founded on. Do you know what our faith is founded on? (allow answers) Our faith is founded on Jesus! We can think of our faith like a house. The foundation of our house is Jesus. The most important part of Christianity is that Jesus died for our sins. We put our trust in Jesus' saving grace -- just like you put your trust in the foundation of your house. The builder and planner of this house is God. Our Bible verse says that we "look forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God." Do you know what an architect is? (allow answers) It is the person who designs a house. He draws plans showing where walls, doors, and windows will go. Without an architect, we wouldn't know what we were building!
We have a foundation in Jesus. We have an architect and a builder in God. But who will maintain this house? Who will take care of this house that God and Jesus have built for us? (allow answers) The answer is you! It takes all of us to maintain this house. Do you know how we can maintain this house? (allow answers) We maintain this house by following and serving God -- and by relying on Jesus, our strong foundation. Amen.
