Whiteboard with eraser and marker
We want to make a list today and so I've brought a white board to help us remember it all. Here is a question for you. When you think of "bad things" that displease God, what pops into your mind? (Allow children to respond). Let's write all these ideas down. (Add to it if needed such things as lying to your parents, hating your friend, selfishness with your brother, pride, jealousy, and so on...)
In our Bible lesson today we see Jesus up on a cross. It was very painful for him and was the worst kind of death a person could have. Yet in the middle of all of that it says in Luke 23:34,
Jesus said, ‘Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’
He was thinking about forgiving these mean people -- Wow! It is sort of like this white board -- filled with lots of bad stuff but in a moment (erase it quickly) it is all taken away and made clean. These people didn't deserve forgiveness by any means and neither do we, but Jesus in his great generous love wipes the board clean. He ends up showing forgiveness two times while he was dying. Once is amazing but two times is unbelievable. There were two criminals on each side of Jesus as he was dying. One of them insulted Jesus but the other feared God. Even though he had done evil, Jesus wiped the board clean and told him, "today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43).
How Do We Apply This To Our Lives?
Do you and I keep a whiteboard list of the wrongs that other people do to us? Are we willing to wipe the board clean and not keep angry toward them? We need his kind of forgiveness and generous love that says, "They don't know what they are doing, I forgive them"
Let Us Pray,
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for forgiving our sins. Help us to be more kind and forgiving like you. Amen.
