God Gathers His Children
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a stuffed hen or picture of a hen
The Point: God gathers us in his grace to protect us
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together. Who knows what this is? (show hen; let the children answer) Yes, a chicken. But what else about the chicken? It is a hen or mother chicken. A hen is very protective of her little chicks. When a bird of prey flies overhead looking for a meal, a hen will gather her chicks under her wings. Her chicks are then protected. A hen will fight for her chicks even giving her life to protect them in trouble. A hen loves her chicks very much.
In our reading from the Bible today Jesus uses this beautiful image of a hen’s love for her chicks to reflect on how God loves is people. God wants to save us and protect us. Even while we were sinners, not doing what God has asked us to do, he sent Jesus. Jesus came to gather all of God’s children under the protective shelter of God’s grace. God loves you so much that he allowed his Son, Jesus, to die for the forgiveness of your sins. That act of grace is the wings of God’s shelter for us.
Sometimes a chick will hear its mother call it, to the safety of her wings, but some might choose not to return to her. Sometimes God’s children ignore Jesus’ call to safety too. When God’s children reject the shelter of Jesus’ love, they set their own fate. The Bible tells us that the day will come when the world will cry out, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
Don’t worry or be afraid when trouble and difficult times come. Remember Jesus promises to gather us under the wings of God’s love and protection.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, you have revealed to us God’s love and protection for us. Help us not to resist your shelter of grace that life’s storms may not overwhelm us. Gracious Father in heaven, gather us together in the shelter of your love and protection. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
