In God we trust
Children's sermon
Object:
a dollar bill
If you think about it, it really is very silly. How can people
worship something like this dollar bill? Can you imagine praying
prayers to this dollar or singing hymns to its glory? Can you
imagine having worship services where we preach about the dollar
or have Sunday school with the dollar as God? It really is silly.
Money is just money -- it is not God.
Even our money says, "In God we trust" (show them). It does not say, "I shall save you" or "Worship me." Our money says, "In God we trust."
But a silly thing happens with many people. They start acting as if money were God! They treat money as if it had the power to save us. They treat money as if it were the most important thing on earth.
God teaches us (and even our money teaches us) to trust in God alone. Jesus said, "You cannot serve God and wealth." Money is used by God but it cannot be god. That is why our offering is so very important. It teaches us not to trust in money but to use money to serve God.
Dear God: Thank you for giving us money that we can give back to you to remind us to trust in you above everything else. Amen.
(This may be a wonderful opportunity to have the children take the offering to the altar if that is your church's practice. Arrange ahead of time with the ushers.)
