God's children
Children's sermon
Object:
Various members of the congregation you have spoken to
ahead of time (You might arrange to have them sit fairly near the
front of the church.)
Good morning! Are most of the children of the congregation
here for the children's sermon? (Let them answer.) It would seem
that most of you are here. But I see some children who are not
sitting here with us. They are sitting in the pews. Let's see if
I can find some more children in this congregation. (Go to one of
the members you have spoken to ahead of time. You can ask him/her
questions about how he/she became a child of God, or you can say,
"(Name) became a child of God on (date) and has been a child of
God ever since."
(Ask the children:) "Does (name) appear to be a child?" (Let them answer.) He/she looks pretty grown-up to me. Let's have (name) come and sit with the rest of the children. Now, let's see if there are some more children here this morning. (Do the same thing to another person in the congregation. After you have two or three other "children" sitting with the children, continue.)
None of these other people appear to be children and yet they are. They are children of God! We never grow out of being God's children. What a privilege it is to be God's own dear daughter, God's precious son! I also am a child of God -- even though I am much older than you.
Some of God's children who were with us a year ago are not with us this morning. They have died and gone to heaven to be with God. Today is a special day we set aside to remember God's children who have gone to heaven. What do we call this day? (Let them answer.) We call it "All Saints' Sunday" because it is the Sunday closest to All Saints' Day which is November 1.
Dear God: Thank you for making us your children. Help us to know how much you love your children and that you have given each of your children the promise of heaven. Amen.
