God's music lesson
Children's sermon
Object:
a music lesson book for piano, guitar, horn, or other instrument -- ask someone to bring his or her music lesson book and instrument to the service
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to have a real treat. I found out the other day that our friend, Mike, is taking guitar lessons. So I asked Mike if he wouldn't mind playing for us.
Mike, how do you like playing the guitar? (let him answer) How long have you been taking lessons? (let him answer) How often do you practice? (let him answer) That is very good. I bet some day you will be a great musician. Would you play your favorite song for us? (ask him to play something that he knows very well)
That was great! We can tell you have practiced this a lot. Now, can I ask you to play another song, something you haven't practiced? (turn the pages back toward the end of the book) Would you play this for me? (let him answer) Give it a try. We are all your friends here and it will help me teach a lesson about Jesus. (let him try to play it)
Is this hard? (let him answer) Will it take a lot of practice to play this song? (let him answer) Will you have to do it over and over again? (let him answer) We call that endurance. What do you learn from practicing? Does it give you character? I mean, do you feel better about yourself when you have done something that you have never done before?
I bet the first song you played was really hard at first, too. But now you feel good because you have suffered through the practice and feel confident when you play it. You can brag about it if you want to. You can tell someone that you are learning to play the guitar and someday you expect to be a really great guitar player.
Did you know that this is the way our faith grows? (let them answer) I have heard Christians brag about their faith. They have read the Bible and have learned how to pray. Many share their lives with the poor and the lonely. Some visit people in prison and teach people about Jesus. Others love to teach Sunday school and sing praises to God. Some Christians love to give gifts to the church for missions and education. These people brag about Jesus and all of the power he is sharing with them.
It isn't easy learning how to play the guitar. It takes a lot of time and suffering. It isn't easy being a Christian either, except when we remember that Jesus has done it all for us and gives us the faith to be special people, the people of God.
