God's temple
Children's sermon
Object:
A model or plastic church building
I have here a toy church building. We often think that God
lives at the church building. We even call this place "God's
house." Here we come to worship God and sing praises to God's
name. Here we learn more about God and we sing about God. In this
building we pray and even dress more formally than usual because
we believe this building is special. AND IT IS! The church
building is a very important building. But it is just a building.
Today I want to tell you about a special place where God lives
that is even more important than the church building. I'm talking
about our bodies.
Our bodies have arms and legs and a head with nose and ears and eyes. We usually think of our bodies as being "our" bodies. But the bodies we have are not really ours! Who do you think owns our bodies? (Let them answer.) God owns our bodies.
If God owns our bodies, how do you suppose God wants us to care for them? (Let them answer.) I believe God wants us to take good care of our bodies. God would want us to eat the right kinds of foods, to exercise, and to stay away from things that might harm our bodies. What are some things that might harm our bodies? (Let them answer.)
Today we learn that the body is the Holy Spirit's temple. What is a "temple"? (Let them answer.) A temple is like a church building. We say it's a place where God lives. God lives in our bodies. Our bodies belong to God.
So -- our bodies belong to God and God lives within us. So what? What difference does that make? (Let them answer.) It means that we can only use our bodies for a while and then we must return them to their owner -- God. It means that we are to take good care of our bodies. It means that God is very near us -- even within us.
I'm glad God's Holy Spirit lives here, in my body, and there -- in your body. It means that God is very close to us and it also means that I need to take good care of my body.
Dear Lord God: Help us take good care of the bodies you have given us to use. Amen.
