The Good News of Jesus for All
Children's sermon
Object:
wise men from a manger scene
The Point: Jesus came with the message of salvation to all people.
The Lesson: Good morning, girls and boys. Thank you for coming up to share this time with me.
Every Christmas I set up a manger scene in our home. Does your family put up a manger scene? (let children answer) The scene in our home has Joseph and Mary and the baby Jesus. There are also shepherds, sheep, and an angel. And of course, wise men and their camels. I brought the wise men from my manger scene with me this morning.
Our reading from Matthew tells us about the wise men coming from a far country in search of the baby Jesus. Do you know how many wise men traveled to find Jesus? (let children answer) Actually, we really don't know. Matthew doesn't tell us how many. Tradition says there were three because three gifts were given to Jesus.
The gifts they brought to Jesus were special. Do any of you know the names of the gifts given to baby Jesus? (let children answer) One gift was fit for a king, the gift of gold. Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. He is to rule and govern in our lives. We are to always do what our King and Savior Jesus wants us to do. The second gift of frankincense was special too. Frankincense is a heavenly smelling spice that was burned in the temple on holy days. The Jewish high priest would burn frankincense in the temple when he sought forgiveness for the peoples' sins. The fragrance made the temple seem like the throne room of God. Jesus is not just our king. He is also our high priest always seeking the forgiveness for our sins. The wise men gave Jesus a third gift of myrrh. Myrrh is a very strong perfume and was used in Jesus' day in the process of a burial. Its smell was so strong that it took away the smell of death. Jesus has come to save us and give us eternal life.
The best part of this story is the wise men came from far away searching for Jesus. Jesus came not just for the small nation of Israel but for all nations. And as someone once said, wise people still seek him.
Closing Prayer: Let us hold hands and unite our hearts in prayer. Jesus, it is such good news that you came to bring the Father's saving love to all people. You are our King and Lord. Jesus, you are our high priest and Savior. Help us to seek you every day of our lives. Jesus, in your name we pray. Amen.
