Good treasure
Children's sermon
Object:
a textbook (good treasure: good teaching / education / upbringing)
"Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us." (v. 14)
Good morning, boys and girls! How many of you have seen one of these before? (show textbook, allow answers) Who can tell me what this is? (allow answers) This is a textbook. Do you know what we use textbooks for? (allow answers) To help us learn. These books are full of information. In fact, we should treat textbooks as if they were valuable treasure! Do you think textbooks are valuable treasure? (allow answers) Some students would say "No!" Many students think textbooks are boring to read. When they think of textbooks, they think of school and tests and homework. That isn't treasure -- it's hard work!
But getting an education is important. Textbooks are a treasure not because they are interesting or easy, but because they help us become more informed about the world around us. A science textbook might teach us about the animals we see every day, or it might teach us about the weather. A social studies textbook tells us the story of our country's history or the world's history. A math textbook teaches us how to solve problems with numbers. A reading textbook teaches us how to enjoy stories and how to think critically about the world around us. All the different subjects we learn in school teach us important things about how to understand our world.
There is one subject that you might not learn in public school but has a special textbook all its own. In fact, we keep this textbook all over the church. Do you know what textbook I'm talking about? (allow answers) I'm talking about the Bible! Have you ever thought of the Bible as a textbook? (allow answers) Probably not. The Bible teaches us about the world around us! While math textbooks teach us to solve problems and science textbooks teach us about how things work, the Bible teaches us how we should treat those around us. That is an important lesson! The Bible teaches us how we should act toward others and how we should act toward God. It teaches us good and bad and helps us learn how to make good decisions.
We can use the lessons from the Bible to help us when we learn things in school. Science books may teach us how to do experiments or how to make things work in certain ways, but we need the ideas of right and wrong taught in the Bible in order to make good decisions when we use this knowledge. Reading textbooks may teach us how to critically analyze the world around us, but the Bible teaches us how to be kind and considerate when we think about other people and things. Our education, both in school and at church, is more valuable than silver or gold -- and textbooks are the gateway to the riches of education. Amen.
