Great expectations
Children's Activity
Object:
SHARING THIS WEEK'S GOSPEL THEME
AT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND AT HOME
Materials:
5x8 index cards
Scissors
Directions:
1. Have the children get into groups of 2 or 3. Give each group a few index cards and some scissors.
2. Instruct the children to come up with a way to cut the index card so that it makes an unbroken loop that they can step through.
3. Give them a chance to try it -- it seems impossible!
4. Give each group a new index card and instruct them to cut it like this: First, fold the card in half so that the short ends are together. Cut a slit through and perpendicular to the fold, making the slit about a half inch from the edge of the card and stopping about a half inch from the other end of the card. Cut a parallel slit about an inch and a half from the first -- only this time, cut it from the opposite end (do not cut through the fold). Continue alternating slits like this every half inch until a half inch from the other edge of the card. Cut the middle section through on the fold. Leave the fold intact at each end to complete the circle. *Practice making the circle before class.
5. Open the cut card. It should create a giant paper loop that a person can easily fit through!
6. Remind children that life is full of surprises! Things that seem impossible are sometimes very possible indeed.
